Common New Mexico Insurance Exam Candidate Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I determine which New Mexico Insurance Exam I need to take?

The type of insurance you would like to sell will determine which New Mexico insurance license you will obtain. There are two main insurance licenses in New Mexico (Life, Accident and Health and Property, Vehicle and Casualty). The Life, Accident and Health insurance license will allow you to sell life and health insurance (including annuities). The Property, Vehicle and Casualty insurance license will allow you to sell all other types of insurance (including personal lines and commercial lines). If you are only going to be selling personal lines and NOT commercial lines then you can take the Personal Lines only exam.

Are the Insurance Exams different state to state?

Yes! Be very careful when preparing for your exam to make sure the material you study is New Mexico specific. There are many insurance schools out there that offer generic study materials. The course you study MUST be New Mexico specific. Our online course was created specifically for the New Mexico insurance exams.

How do I schedule my insurance exam?

New Mexico insurance exams are administered by PSI. To schedule an exam, candidates may call PSI toll free at (800) 733-9267 or visit their website here

Are there any pre-licensing education requirements for my New Mexico insurance exam?

There are no pre-licensing education requirements. However, you must know the concepts to pass the exam. Choosing TesTeachers as your pre-licensing education provider is the first step in preparing to pass this exam.

All of our insurance courses are specific to each State’s laws and regulations.  Our Study Plan will navigate you through all of the tools provided in your online course.

Happy studies!

How do I apply for my license?

Before scheduling an examination, all candidates must complete and submit the license application (Form 210) along with any other documentation and their Examination Registration Form (found at the end of the Candidate Bulletin) to the New Mexico PSI Processing Center. New Mexico forms and applications can also be found at :

http://www.osi.state.nm.us/

Passing exam scores are submitted to the Office of Superintendent of Insurance and upon receipt your license will be issued. Applications are valid for six months.

What should I bring to the test center the day of my New Mexico insurance exam?

You should bring your Key Facts from our New Mexico insurance exam prep course to re-read just prior to going in to take your New Mexico insurance exam. This will load your memory for the test. You cannot take anything into the test room with you other than what the proctor provides you. You will be able to leave your personal belongings in a locker in the testing center waiting room. They will provide you with a pen/pencil, scratch paper, and a basic function calculator at the test site. Make sure to write down your cheat sheet on your scratch paper when you sit down at your cubicle prior to starting your New Mexico insurance exam. This will allow you to refer back to it whenever you need to during the exam.

If I don't pass is there any waiting period that applies before I can retake the New Mexico insurance exam?

This computerized exam is scored immediately upon completion of the exam. If a candidate fails they must pay a reexamination fee and retake the exam.  If a candidate fails an exam twice, they must wait 30 days before re-examination. If a candidate fails the exam an additional two times (after the 30 day waiting period), they must wait six months before re-examination and submit a new application form, fees, registration form and registration fees.

Do I have to get fingerprinted?

The state of New Mexico requires candidates to get fingerprinted as part of the licensure process. Candidates can register to be fingerprinted at www.cogentid.com. The cost for fingerprint processing is $44.00.

What do the questions on the New Mexico insurance exam look like?

Here are two New Mexico insurance exam questions that come from our materials that are very similar to the formatting and content of the questions on the exam:

Life, Accident and Health

1. An insurance producer selling a Variable annuity whose cash value depends on the performance of an underlying investment account must be registered with:

A. The National Association of Insurance Commission

B. The National Association of Life Underwriters

C. The Chartered Life Underwriters

D. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)

Property, Vehicle and Casualty

2. A customer has a Personal Auto Policy (PAP) written with a combined single limit of liability of $100,000. If the customer is involved in an at fault accident that injures five other people $25,000 each, how much will his policy pay:

A. $25,000

B. $75,000

C. $100,000

D. $125,000

Answers and explanations to these questions found in our comprehensive New Mexico insurance exam prep online and print materials are as follows:

1. Answer - D Explanation

Producers selling Variable life and Variable annuities must have a state life insurance license plus a federal securities license (Series 6 or 7), which are now issued by FINRA.

2. Answer - C Explanation:

While most PAPs are written with 'split limits', such as $25/$50/$50, which means that the most the insurer will pay for Bl if you injure one person would be $25,000, and the most they will pay for Bl if you injure more than one person in the same occurrence is $50,000. Remember, the per person limit for Bl is within the per occurrence limit. The last number is the limit for PD to the property of others per occurrence, which is in this example is $50,000 for PD, for a total of $100,000, not counting the cost of defense. However, most BAPs are written with single limits of liability, meaning that there are no internal or inside limits. if your combined single limit is $100,000, the insurer will pay up to that amount for Bl and/or PD, so one person could collect up to $100,000. But, if they did, there would be nothing left to cover the Bl of others of PD to their property.
